Letter: Harold & Barbara to Harold's Parents, 1963

December 8, 1963
Sunday afternoon

Dear Folks,

We are just in the middle of a nice shower that we hope will wash the car somewhat.  This afternoon I got my Sabin vaccine at one of the elementary schools near here and there were a lot of people there when we went.  Harold already had his first dose at MCV.  It was all very simple and all we had to do was to walk through the building.

We have been working on our Christmas cards and have them all addressed but are putting notes in most of them which takes a little longer.  So far I don't have too much of the Christmas mood but I hope that it comes soon.  I'll get it as soon as vacation comes along.

Tomorrow will be our six months anniversary and as we were coming home from church today Harold asked me if I wanted to celebrate and eat out and we did.  We went to a Hot Shoppes restaurant and had Pappy Parker fried chicken.  It was all right but would have been better if it would have been hot instead of just warm.  We did have a great time though.

We have been searching for an organist at church and there have been several possibilities but none have worked out so far until last Wednesday evening when Margaret and Estelle brought Estelle's dance teacher to choir practice to play the organ.  He is a Baptist from  South Carolina and his style of playing is jazzy and this is portrayed in his actual playing, his registrations and his whole approach to playing.  He didn't follow Bill and didn't catch on to the time or to the notes after having gone over the piece several times and Harold and I weren't too impressed with him at all.  He was supposed to play at church this morning and around 8:30 Estelle called and said that Bob, the man, was sick.  That puts things off to an even worst start and Bill Garber isn't impressed with him either.  We are going to bring the matter up at board meeting tomorrow evening and I don't know what will come of it.  Bill asked me whether I would rather play or sing and I told him that playing is more of a challenge for me and that I would almost rather do that but that I would do whatever the church needed me at the most.

Yesterday I really did a dumb thing.  Harold had gone down to MCV to do some lab work, Lucille wasn't here, and I was doing the washing.  As I took a load of clothes out to hang up I pulled the door closed behind me and it locked!  So I went on out to hang up the clothes and when I came back I tried all of the other doors but they were locked also so I tried all of the window screens and finally got the screen off of the back porch window and let myself in that way.  There were some men working on the apartment houses back of us here and I bet they wondered what in the world was going on.  I sure was glad to get back in the house again because it was cold outside.  If I couldn't have gotten back in the house I would have gone over to Mrs. Bonner's.

I'll let Harold finish this letter.  Hope to see you next week.  I told my students that my mother-in-law was coming to the program and they asked, "Are you married!"  The program is a traditional thing at this school and is the Christmas story acted out with a background of carols.

I don't have too much to say this time. I am in the process of studying for an OB test tomorrow.  I had a Pathology test Wednesday which I made a C on.  It was very detailed and tricky.  On Friday, I had a Microbiology exam but I don't know what I made on it.  I will probably just get a C in the course because there were a couple of tests that I didn't do too well on, but the last few I have been doing better.  I reckon that a couple of C's won't hurt me and it might even do me good to be cut down on a couple of courses.

I haven't heard the details on the SAMA meeting yet, but I should find out tomorrow, so I will let you know more later in the week.  In fact, the last time I heard there was still some question as to whether it is going to be held, but the guy that I talked to was confident that it would be planned.

We were very much shocked to hear about Glenn Byerly.  Was it a coronary?  You just don't know what to expect next these days.

I will sign off for now and probably write more later.

Love,
Barbara & Harold
